After success with an homage to the Broadway musical Chicago in 2003, the hit daytime soap opera "Passions" is now set to head down the yellow brick road with a musical episode borrowing from Broadway's Wicked.
According to Soaps.com, recent Drowsy Chaperone star Georgia Engel will play the good witch Esmeralda, an old schoolmate and rival of "Passions" character Tabitha Lenox, the 300-year-old witch who wreaks havoc in the town of Harmony.
An official air-date for the Wicked-themed episode has not been announced. "Passions" airs on NBC weekdays at 2 PM ET. Check local listings.
Georgia Engel is well known for her television work on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Everybody Loves Raymond." Her Broadway credits include Hello, Dolly!; My One and Only; The Boys from Syracuse; and The Drowsy Chaperone.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
