Edie Falco plays a mother and teacher who sheds her life and moves to a rundown apartment building in the Off-Broadway world premiere of The Madrid, Liz Flahive's comedy that opened Feb. 26. She'll be there a little longer, now to May 5, Manhattan Theatre Club announced. This is the second extension of the run at New York City Center Stage I. Leigh Silverman (Chinglish, From Up Here) directs.
Composer Tom Kitt, who won the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for Next to Normal, wrote original music for The Madrid.
According to MTC, "Falco stars as Martha, a kindergarten teacher with a life many would want: a loving husband (Conlee), a devoted daughter (Strole). But when she leaves it all behind, it's up to her daughter Sarah to pick up the pieces. Two-time Obie winner, Leigh Silverman directs this hilarious and heartbreaking story about motherhood, freedom, and trying to see the people in your family as they really are."
Playwright Flahive writes for "Nurse Jackie" and penned Off-Broadway's From Up Here, which received the John Gassner Playwriting Award from the Outer Critics Circle. She is a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Department of Dramatic Writing.
The creative team also includes David Zinn (scenic design), Emily Rebholtz (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design) and Jill BC Du Boff (sound design).
The Madrid was commissioned through the Bank of America New American Play Program.
As previously reported, Goldstein joined the cast in the role of Danny starting Feb. 28, taking over for Christopher Evan Welch, who had another professional commitment.
MTC is under the leadership of artistic director Lynne Meadow and executive producer Barry Grove. Friedman Theatre (261 W. 47th Street) and two Off-Broadway theatres at New York City Center (131 W. 55th Street). Since January 2011, Mandy Greenfield (artistic producer) has taken the lead in programming and execution at MTC's Off-Broadway programming.
