The limited engagement, which marked the first Broadway revival of the Ionesco play, began life in a well-received run at Sydney's Belvoir St. Theatre in 2007 directed by Armfield and also featuring Rush. The duo reunited for the Broadway staging that began performances March 7 and officially opened March 26. Exit the King will have played 21 previews and 93 regular performances at the Barrymore.
Co-adapted by Armfield and star Rush, who earned a Best Actor Tony Award for his highly physical performance, Exit the King boasts a starry cast including Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon ("Dead Man Walking") as Queen Marguerite, Lauren Ambrose ("Six Feet Under," Awake and Sing!) as Queen Marie, Tony Award winner Andrea Martin (My Favorite Year, Young Frankenstein) as Juliette, Brian Hutchison (Proof, Invention of Love) as the Guard and William Sadler (Biloxi Blues, Julius Caesar) as the Doctor.
Company members also include understudies Michael Hammond (M. Butterfly, Long Day's Journey Into Night), David Manis (Coast of Utopia, The Rivals) and Erika Rolfsrud (Coast of Utopia, Rabbit Hole).
Exit the King, according to press notes, "is a hilarious and poignant comedy about a megalomaniacal ruler, King Berenger (Rush) whose incompetence has left his country in near ruin. Despite the efforts of Queen Marguerite (Sarandon) and the other members of the court to convince the King he has only 90 minutes left to live, he refuses to relinquish any control."
Exit the King is produced on Broadway by Stuart Thompson, Robert Fox, Howard Panter, Tulchin/Bartner, Scott Rudin, The Shubert Organization and Jon B. Platt.
