Flashdance Musical to Make World Premiere in U.K. in July
12 Feb 2008
British producer David Ian has backed a stage version of
Flashdance based on the 1983 movie starring Jennifer Beals.
Flashdance, the Musical will make its world premiere at the Theatre Royal Plymouth on July 19 prior to a national tour.
In the film Beals played Alex, a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night who dreams of a dancing career.
The creative team for the stage show includes director Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun and Gem of the Ocean on Broadway); Thomas Hedley, Jr., who wrote the screenplay to the original movie; and Robert Cary, the lyricist of another screen-to-stage adaptation, The Thomas Crown Affair; and choreographer Arlene Phillips.
The production is the latest adaptation of such eighties music-based movies as Dirty Dancing, Footloose and the critically panned Desperately Seeking Susan.
Flashdance is presented by Christopher Malcolm, David Ian and AEGON in association with Theatre Royal Plymouth and Paramount Pictures.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
