With the 2012-13 Broadway season now at an end (April 25 was the cut-off date for eligibility for the 67th Annual Tony Awards), Playbill.com offers a four-part look at the season. Here are the 2012-13 special engagements.
From the brief return of the Tony Award-winning musical Fela!, with its original Tony Award-nominated star Sahr Ngaujah, to The Rascals reunion in The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream, a new concert event written by guitarist Steven Van Zandt, here is an overview of the six special events that opened in time for the 2013 Tonys, which will take place June 9 at Radio City Music Hall.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
