Further Casting Announced for Sam Mendes' Production of King Lear at U.K.'s National Theatre in January 2014

The previously announced new production of King Lear that will star Simon Russell Beale in the title role under the direction of Sam Mendes has confirmed further casting. It will begin performances at the National's Olivier Theatre in London in January 2014.

Also now cast are Kate Fleetwood as Goneril, Anna Maxwell Martin as Regan, Adrian Scarborough as the Fool, Stanley Townsend as Kent and Olivia Vinall as Cordelia.

Fleetwood was last seen at the National in London Road, and was Tony-nominated on Broadway for reprising her role as Lady Macbeth opposite Patrick Stewart's Macbeth in a transfer from Chichester's Minerva Theatre.

Maxwell Martin has appeared in the West End as Sally Bowles in the original 2006 cast of Rufus Norris' production of Cabaret and in The Female of the Species in 2008, and has appeared at the National in Three Sisters, Honour and His Dark Materials, at the Royal Court in Dumb Show and at the Almeida in Measure for Measure. TV credits include "Bleak House" and "Poppy Shakespeare" (winning the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress in 2006 and 2009, respectively) and "South Riding."

Scarborough was Olivier-nominated this year for Hedda Gabler at the Old Vic. Other recent theatre credits include Betty Blue Eyes (West End's Novello Theatre) and After the Dance and The Habit of Art (both National Theatre). Film credits include "The King's Speech." TV credits include "Upstairs Downstairs," "Gavin and Stacey" and "Miranda."

Townsend has appeared extensively at the National and Royal Court, and was last seen in the West End in Broken Glass that transferred from the Tricycle.

Vinall is currently playing the role of Desdemona opposite Adrian Lester's Othello at the National.
