Giuseppe Verdi Opera Rigoletto, With Alternating Cast, Kicks Off San Francisco Opera's 2012-13 Season Sept. 7

Rigoletto, featuring music by Giuseppe Verdi and a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, kicks off San Francisco Opera's 90th season Sept. 7 at the War Memorial Opera House.

Directed by Harry Silverstein, the production features Željko Lučić and Marco Vratogna alternating in the titular role, Aleksandra Kursak and Albina Shagimuratova alternating in the role of Gilda, and Francesco Demuro and Arturo Chacón-Cruz alternating as the Duke of Mantua.

Also in the cast are Kendall Gladen as Maddalena, Robert Pomakov as Count Monterone, Andrea Silvestrelli as Sparafucile, Joo Won Kang as Marullo, Daniel Montenegro as Matteo Borsa, Ryan Kuster as Count Ceprano, Laura Krumm as Countess Ceprano, Renée Rapier as Giovanna, Laura Krumm as A Page and Jere Torkelsen as Usher.

Giuseppe Finzi and Nicola Luisotti alternate as conductor of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. Performances continue through Sept. 30.

Verdi's Rigoletto, sung in Italian with English supertitles, is "the vivid and compelling story of a vengeful court jester desperately attempting to protect his daughter from disaster," according to press notes.



Other members of the creative team include set designer Michael Yeargan, costume designer Constance Hoffman, lighting designer Chris Maravich, chorus director Ian Robertson and choreographer Lawrence Pech.
