Alley Theatre veteran James Black was originally announced to star in the production that was scheduled to begin previews Sept. 28. Performances have been canceled through Oct. 5.
"I must put my health above all, follow the medical guidance of my doctor, and step away from this role and this great production," Black said in a statement. "I leave with a heavy heart and apologize for disappointing loyal Alley subscribers and current ticket holders."
The Alley did not disclose the reason for Black's health-related departure, but asked people to "respect the privacy of James Black," adding, "[We] feel confident that he will return to full strength soon."
Artistic director Gregory Boyd stages the production that will continue through Oct. 28 on the Hubbard Stage. A new opening night has not been announced.
Fleshler ( Spring Awakening, Arcadia) joins Tony Award nominee Josie de Guzman ( Guys and Dolls) as Willy and Linda Loman, respectively, in a cast that also features Zachary Spicer as Biff and Jay Sullivan ( Jerusalem) as Happy with Jeffrey Bean, James Belcher, Emily Neves, Melissa Pritchett, Todd Waite, Ellen Dyer, Drew Hirshfield, Rebekah Stevens and Sidney Williams. Death of a Salesman has scenic design by Hugh Landwehr, costume design by Judith Dolan, lighting design by Pat Collins with original composition and sound design by Josh Schmidt.
According to the Alley, "The play juxtaposes the American Dream with the realities of a fluctuating economy, unequal opportunities, and unfair advantages, with vivid characters and consummate theatricality. As salesman Willy Loman approaches the end of his working life, he must reconcile his unrealized dreams while struggling against the current world."
Tickets are available by visiting AlleyTheatre. The Alley Theatre is located at 615 Texas Avenue in Houston, TX.
