The world premiere of Abingdon Theatre Company's Hellman v. McCarthy, featuring Dick Cavett playing himself, begins performances March 14 prior to an official opening March 26 at the June Havoc Theatre.

The limited engagement of Brian Richard Mori's drama continues through April 13.

Roberta Maxwell (Equus, "Brokeback Mountain") plays Lillian Hellman, and Tony nominee Marcia Rodd (Shelter, Last of the Red Hot Lovers) portrays Mary McCarthy. The cast also includes Peter Brouwer (Lost on the Natchez Trace, Bodega Bay), Rowan Michael Meyer (Benito Cereno, Blood Brothers) and Jeff Woodman (Cymbeline, A Pirate's Lullaby).

Here's how the production is billed: "The greatest literary feud in modern American history began on January 25, 1980 when literary critic Mary McCarthy appeared as a guest on 'The Dick Cavett Show' and declared that 'every word [playwright Lillian Hellman] writes is a lie, including "and" and "the."' Hellman went ballistic and sued McCarthy for libel, sparking a law suit that spanned more than four years. Hellman v. McCarthy is a roller coaster ride filled with comedy and pathos."

Cavett's stage credits include Otherwise Engaged, Into The Woods and The Rocky Horror Show, and his film work includes "Forrest Gump," "Beetlejuice," "The Simpsons" and "Bored to Death." He was the host of "The Dick Cavett Show," which won three Emmys and aired on ABC from 1968-75 and on PBS from 1977-82. Cavett also hosted talk shows on the USA, HBO and CNBC cable networks and is the co-author of two books, "Cavett" and "Eye On Cavett."

The production has set design by Andrew Lu, lighting design by Travis McHale, costume design by Tony Award nominee Jane Greenwood and sound design by Ian Wehrle. Production stage manager is Mark Hoffner.
