Husband-and-Wife Team Will Star in World Premiere of Kingdom City at La Jolla Playhouse
30 Jul 2014
La Jolla Playhouse has announced the cast and creative team for the world-premiere production of Kingdom City, a comedy about religious oppression in a small town.
Performances of Sheri Wilner's play begin Sept. 4 prior to an official opening Sept. 12. The production will continue through Oct. 5
"I am in awe of how playwright Sheri Wilner explores both sides of a culture war between artistic freedom and religious values with such honesty, humor and intelligence. I look forward to watching this tremendous cast and creative team bring her vibrant new work to life," artistic director Christopher Ashley said in a statement.
Directed by Jackson Gay, the cast features the real life husband-and-wife team Kate Blumberg (The Syringa Tree) and Todd Weeks (The Full Monty) playing on-stage partners Miriam and Daniel, along with Cristina Gerla ("Glee") as Katie and Ian Littleworth (The Lonely Boy’s Guide to Survival (and Werewolves)) as Luke. The cast also includes Austyn Myers (Lost in Yonkers, Brighton Beach Memoirs) as Matt and Katie Sapper (bare: a Pop Opera) as Crystal.
Here's how the production is billed: "When displaced New York director Miriam finds herself in Kingdom City, Missouri, she reluctantly agrees to direct a high school production of The Crucible. As the students fall deeper into their roles, the play unlocks their own unspoken desires, creating a firestorm in this small, predominantly Christian town. Kingdom City is a comic and smart world premiere in which a 20th Century classic inspires a 21st Century showdown."
The creative team for Kingdom City includes scenic designer Robert Brill, costume designer David Reynoso, lighting designer Paul Whitaker, sound designer Nick Drashner and dramaturg Gabriel Greene.
