Sir Ian McKellen returns to the West End beginning Feb. 20, when his starring role in August Strindberg's Dance of Death comes to the Lyric Shaftesbury Avenue from New York.
In the States he starred opposite Helen Mirren; her role will be played in London by Frances de la Tour, who was last seen on Shaftesbury Avenue in Coward's Fallen Angels. Owen Teale co-stars.
The production was a great success in New York, where McKellen is as popular on Broadway as he is in Hollywood, where his role as Gandalf in the "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy has given him huge star status.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
