La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, producers Bruce Robert Harris and Jack W. Batman, and The Transfer Group will present the "completely immersive" production that will transform La Mirada Theatre into Ewan High School. The production promises that it will put audiences "at the center of the action in this bold and thrilling twist on the now-classic musical."
The new production will begin previews March 12, 2015, towards a March 18 opening night. The limited run will continue through April 5.
In recent years, the original writing team of Academy Award-winning composer Michael Gore ("Fame," "Terms of Endearment"), Academy Award-winning lyricist Dean Pitchford ("Fame," "Footloose") and "Carrie" film screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen returned to work on Carrie, which was an infamous 1988 Broadway flop.
The 2012 Off-Broadway production by MCC Theater, which featured additional songs and revisions, focused less on the darker horror aspects of the tale and emphasized the effects of teen bullying and school politics. Critical response to the revised production was mixed. The production has since been produced in high schools and regional theatres across the U.S.
"The story of Carrie has endured in the popular consciousness for decades, but no one has ever experienced it from this point of view," producers Bruce Robert Harris and Jack W. Batman said in a statement. "The idea of placing the audience in the center of this world was just too tantalizing to resist. It's going to be thrilling."
"Director Brady Schwind is building on Carrie legacy with his own unique vision for our show," creators Cohen, Gore and Pitchford added in a statement. "Making it an environmental experience for the audience is intriguing and daring – like the story itself. We look forward to this next chapter!"
Here's how the L.A. run is billed: "Taunted by her peers at school and terrorized by her religious zealot mother at home, Carrie tells the haunting tale of 17-year-old Carrie White. Lonely and tormented, Carrie discovers she has a shocking secret power. But when a prank at her high school prom goes horribly wrong, everyone finds just how powerful a secret can be..."
