The new show, which marks a departure from Mason's solo shows, has the comic singing and dancing with a supporting cast. The production continues through Oct. 5 at HHTC prior to beginning previews at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre Oct. 23 and opening on Broadway Nov. 19.
In Laughing Room Only, Mason plays himself attempting to put on a $10 million Broadway musical for $19.99. The new musical within the show will actually be staged as part of the show through "sexy, hilarious and even nude sketches, songs and production numbers," a release explains.
Laughing Room Only is written by comedian-songwriter Dennis Blair based on a concept by writer Digby Wolfe with music by Doug Katsaros.
Robert Johanson (former artistic director of Paper Mill: The State Theatre of New Jersey) directs a cast that also includes Darrin Baker (Sunset Boulevard, Footloose), Robert Creighton (The Lion King, — Toronto and Los Angeles), Barry Finkel (Side Show, High Society), Ruth Gottschall (The Music Man, Forum) and Cheryl Stern (The Women, That's Life).
The new Broadway presentation is produced by Jyll Rosenfeld and Jon Stoll and James Scibelli in association with Sidney Kimmel and John Morgan. Tickets for the Broadway run at the Brooks Atkinson, 256 West 47 St., call (212) 307-7171.
Mason has previously performed on Broadway in six of his own one-man shows — The World According to Me, Brand New, Politically Incorrect, Love Thy Neighbor, Much Ado About Everything and Prune Danish. He received a special Tony Award for the first.
