Jodie Langel, Chris McCabe, Jacob Aaron Cullum Among Cast of Broward's Bare, Damon Intrabartolo-Jon Hartmere Pop Opera
14 Mar 2013
Broward Center for the Performing Arts in association with DreamChild Productions will present bare, the pop opera by Damon Intrabartolo and Jon Hartmere — which was recently re-envisioned as a book musical and seen Off-Broadway — March 27-30 at the company's Amaturo Theater.
Andrew Fiacco directs and choreographs the production, which features music by Intrabartolo and a book and lyrics by Hartmere, with Eric Alsford as musical director.
This is not the same incarnation that was recently seen at Off-Broadway's New World Stages that featured a revised libretto and additional material by Lynne Shankel (Altar Boyz, Cry-Baby).
As previously announced, that staging has international productions planned for Korea, Japan, Brazil and Los Angeles, and a cast album is in the works.
The cast of Broward's bare includes Chris McCabe as Peter, Jacob Aaron Cullum as Jason, Nicole Piro as Ivy, Mike Westrich as Matt, Jodie Langel (Les Misérables) as Claire, Mimi Jimenez (Rent national tour) as Sister Chantelle, singer-songwriter Ray Boltz as the Priest, David Tracy as Lucas and Marissa Rosen as Nadia — the role she performed at the Broward Center in 2010 — with Ric Ducosin, Lindsey Johr, Kali Rosendo, Laurence London and Angela Moorman.
Here's how Broward describes the pop opera: "The story zooms in on the relationship between two boys, Peter (McCabe) a socially awkward loner and Jason (Cullum) the school’s golden boy. Throughout the story we see the struggles, trials, and tribulations that they go through to keep their relationship alive yet hidden, and how their love affects their friends and the people around them. This includes Ivy (Piro) whose interest in Jason has increasingly grown and Matt (Westrich) who's affections for Ivy constantly go unnoticed."
Bare had its world premiere at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles, CA, where it began performances Oct. 14, 2000, and ran through Feb. 25, 2001. Following the Los Angeles production, Bare began its run at the American Theatre of Actors (Chernuchin Theatre) March 25, 2004. It opened April 19, 2004, and played through May 27, 2004. Bare has since had more than 100 productions worldwide.
