"Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance," which tells the story of the first quintessentially American dance company, the Joffrey Ballet, and is narrated by Tony Award winner Mandy Patinkin (Evita), premieres Dec. 28 on PBS.
The 90-minute documentary begins at 9 PM ET (check local listings) and features rare archival footage and behind-the-scenes photos as well as excerpts from signature company works.
"Founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino revolutionized American dance by combining modern with traditional ballet to create a new and daring art form," according to PBS. "['Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance'] is the first to chronicle the Joffrey Ballet's pioneering dance philosophy. Award-winning filmmaker Bob Hercules traces the compan's struggles and triumphs: from its humble beginnings in 1956, touring the United States in a borrowed station wagon, to becoming one of the world’s most exciting and prominent ballet companies."
Patinkin, who won the Tony Award for his performance in Evita, was also Tony-nominated for his work in The Wild Party and Sunday in the Park With George. His other Broadway credits include Falsettos, The Secret Garden and Hamlet, among others.
