The evening begins with cocktails at 6 PM, followed by a 7 PM performance celebrating Menken's life and career in the theatre. Sheldon Harnick and Maury Yeston are the honorary chairs for the event.
The evening promises performances and recollections by Julia Murney ( Wicked, Closer Than Ever), lyricist David Zippel ( City of Angels), Malcolm Gets ( Story of My Life), Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba ( Contact, Curtains), Tituss Burgess ( The Little Mermaid), Tony-winning composer Maury Yeston ( Nine, Grand Hotel), Lindsay Mendez ( Dogfight), Tony-winning Newsies lyricist Jack Feldman, Tony-nominated Sister Act and Leap of Faith lyricist Glenn Slater, Ron Raines ( Follies), Scott Coulter, Lisa Livesay ( Wicked), Klea Blackhurst and Jason Graae.
The music director/pianist is Beth Ertz, who is joined by John Miller on bass.
Alan Menken has earned eight Academy Awards, ten Grammys, seven Golden Globes and a 2012 Tony Award for Newsies. His works for the stage also include Sister Act, A Leap of Faith, Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Weird Romance and A Christmas Carol.
Menken's Academy Award-winning compositions include "Under the Sea" from Disney's " The Little Mermaid," "A Whole New World" from " Aladdin," the title song from "Beauty and the Beast" and "Colors of the Wind" from "Pocahontas." His screen musicals also include " Newsies," "Hercules," "Enchanted" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," which was later adapted for the stage.
