Williamstown Theatre Festival will host a family affair when Emlyn Williams' The Corn Is Green begins performances Aug. 1, starring Kate Burton and her son (Morgan Ritchie) and daughter (Charlotte Ritchie).
Three-time Tony nominee Kate Burton (Hedda Gabler, The Constant Wife, The Elephant Man) will play Miss Moffat, who according to press notes, "is hellbent on offering the illiterate locals the fundamentals of a decent education. She converts her own home into a classroom and becomes deeply committed to one of her students in particular – Morgan Evans [played by Morgan Ritchie] – a bully who reveals true promise once Miss Moffat helps him to discover the joys of learning."
Charlotte Ritchie will portray one of the town's children in the production. Burton's involvement in the production is also noteworthy, as she is the goddaughter of late Corn Is Green playwright and actor, Emlyn Williams.
Nicholas Martin (Butley, Hedda Gabler, Observe the Sons of Ulster…) will direct the cast that also features Becky Ann Baker, Dylan Baker, Tom Bloom, Amanda Leigh Cobb, Barnett Cohen, Jordan Dean, Ginnifer Goodwin, Greg Hildreth, Patrick Lynch, Kathy McCafferty, Rod McLachlan, Blake Segal and Joe Tippett.
The creative team comprises Jeff Mahshie (costume design), Frances Aronson (lighting design), James Noone (scenic design) and Drew Levy (sound design).
The Corn Is Green plays on the Williamstown Theatre Festival main stage Aug. 1-12. Tickets are available at www.wtfestival.org or (413) 597-3400.
