Billy Crystal, William Shatner, Martin Short, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are among the celebrities taking part in a one-night-only Sept. 27 reading of A Midsummer Night's Dream to benefit the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles.
SCLA artistic director Ben Donenberg directs the groovy "psychedelic 1960's adaptation" of the romantic comedy that begins at 7:30 PM at the Freud Playhouse. Music from the era will be incorporated into the staging.
Wilson and Hanks co-host the evening that also promises performances by Topher Grace, Gillian Jacobs, Eddie Redmayne, Cedric the Entertainer, Paul Dooley, Olivia Thirlby, Alan Tudyk and more.
All proceeds support The SCLA and its arts-based veterans employment and youth employment programs for inner-city youth, arts education in local schools, and professional union-contracted productions.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
