I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road (Off-Broadway at New York City Center). The final Encores! Off-Center presentation, I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road features Renee Elise Goldsberry (Heather), Jason Rabinowitz (Jake), Christina Sajous (Alice), Jennifer Sanchez (Cheryl) and Frederick Weller (Joe). The musical, with book and lyrics by Gretchen Cryer and music by Nancy Ford, "created a sensation when it premiered in the late 1970s," according to press notes. "In it, a former pop star ditches the romantic songs of her past and attempts a comeback by performing personal songs that reflect women’s changing roles and attitudes. The show stoked the fires of feminism, not only with its joyous rock score proclaiming empowerment for women, but because of its female songwriting team — a rarity in musical theater then and now." Volleygirls (Off-Broadway at The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre). The world-premiere production of Volleygirls, part of the 10th New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF), stars Susan Blackwell as a disgraced Olympian coaching an oddball team of high-school volleyball players. In Volleygirls, according to producers, "Kim Brindell (Blackwell) was once a world-class athlete before she choked and became an Olympic joke. After years of avoiding the sport that shattered her, she finds herself in charge of a team of wide-eyed, misfit, high-school girls. With the encouragement of a headmaster who's had a crush on her since college, and the resistance of a hardline, helicopter P.T.A. mom, Kim finds a way to help the girls, to accept their help in return, and to win it all." Here Lies Love (Off-Broadway at The Public Theater). The Public Theater's acclaimed production of Here Lies Love, a new immersive musical by David Byrne, Fatboy Slim and Tony-nominated director Alex Timbers, features Ruthie Ann Miles and Jose Llana as Imelda and Ferdinand Marcos, respectively. The cast also includes Renee Albulario, Melody Butiu, Natalie Cortez, Debralee Daco, Joshua Dela Cruz, Kelvin Moon Loh, Jeigh Madjus, Ruthie Ann Miles, Maria-Christina Oliveras, Conrad Ricamora, Trevor Salter and Janelle Velasquez. According to the Public, "Within a pulsating dance club atmosphere, David Byrne and Fatboy Slim deconstruct the astonishing journey of Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos retracing her meteoric rise from childhood to her subsequent descent into infamy and disgrace at the end of the People Power Revolution. Here Lies Love is neither a period piece nor a biography, neither a play nor a traditional musical but a wholly immersive theatrical event combining songs influenced by four decades of dance music, adrenaline-fueled choreography, and a remarkable 360-degree scenic and video environment to go beyond Imelda's near-mythic obsession with shoes and explore the true tragic consequences of power and responsibility."
