This year's Evening Standard Theatre Awards are being presented Nov. 17 at London's Savoy Theatre, but already one result is known: The reader-voted "London's Best Night Out" has been won by The Book of Mormon, following an online poll on the paper's website.
According to a story in the Evening Standard, "Thousands of votes were received on our website, and the hit musical, currently at the Prince of Wales Theatre, beat off tough competition to scoop the prize."
Other shows that were nominated included Once and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.
The Book of Mormon is also in contention for the Ned Sherrin Award for Best Musical. Also nominated are the Menier Chocolate Factory's production of Merrily We Roll Along and The Light Princess at the National Theatre.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
