Longtime Phantom Star to Lead Les Miz at Orlando Shakespeare Theater
19 Jun 2014
Davis Gaines, best known for his lengthy run in the title role of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, will play Javert in the Orlando Shakespeare Theater production of Les Misérables.
Running Sept. 10-Oct. 12, the production will also feature Michael Hunsaker (Ragtime, Into the Woods) as Jean Valjean. Additional casting will be announced.
Les Misérables is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg and is based on the novel by Victor Hugo. It has music by Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and original French text by Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel and additional material by James Fenton. The original London 1985 production of Les Miz was adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird.
The musical is currently being revived on Broadway starring Tony Award nominees Ramin Karimloo (Valjean) and Will Swenson (Javert).
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
