Lorna Luft and Liza Minnelli Join Forces for Lorna's Pink Party, Benefit for Actors Fund, Oct. 14 at Birdland
14 Oct 2013
The Actors Fund's 2013 edition of Nothing Like a Dame, which is entitled Lorna’s Pink Party and benefits the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and the Dr. Philomena McAndrew Fund of Tower Cancer Research Foundation, is presented Oct. 14 at 7 PM at Birdland with an encore performance scheduled for Oct. 21 at 7 PM.
The evenings are hosted by actress, recording artist and author Lorna Luft and also feature Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner Liza Minnelli. The benefit marks the first time in 20 years that the sisters have performed together; the last time was a duet for the 1993 Tony Awards.
Luft, who went public with her recent battle against breast cancer, is celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Minnelli and special guests, many of them also cancer survivors, with the message, “We made it and you will too!”
“This event means the world to me,” said Luft in an earlier statement. “I’m so grateful to be feeling so well and performing again. These two Birdland nights are the perfect opportunity for me to gather some friends—including my sister—to raise money to help two essential organizations.”
Tony-winning actress (and Actors Fund Trustee) Newman added, “I’m thrilled that this year’s Nothing Like a Dame event will feature the wonderful Lorna Luft hosting a slew of fantastically talented friends. It’s going to be a great couple of nights, all in support of two great organizations: The Actors Fund and Tower Cancer Research Foundation.”
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
