Lorna Luft, Tony Yazbeck and Lillias White Sing Great Songs from Flop Shows Tonight
31 May 2014
The 92Y's 2014 Lyrics & Lyricists concert series comes to a close May 31 with Panning for Gold: Great Songs from Flop Shows, featuring Lorna Luft, Tony Yazbeck, Tony winner Lillias White and more.
Curated by Tony Award-winning lyricist and director David Zippel, the May 31-June 1 concerts include songs from Very Warm for May, How Now Dow Jones, Everybody’s Welcome and Drat The Cat!, as well as some of Zippel's own short-lived works.
"This show, I hope, will be filled with surprises," Zippel said in a statement. "Songs that you walked in humming but had no idea were given birth in stillborn musicals, and songs that even the most dedicated Broadway buff has never heard."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
