Louise Pitre Part of The Last Ship Reading; Is Sting-Scored Musical Eyeing Broadway in 2014?
14 May 2013
Tony Award nominee Louise Pitre (Mamma Mia!) was part of a reading of The Last Ship, the new musical by Brian Yorkey, Sting and John Logan that received a New York presentation in recent weeks, according to the Star.
As previously reported by Playbill.com, Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello (Other Desert Cities, The Normal Heart, I'll Eat You Last), who staged a U.K. reading of the rock musical in early 2012, directed the two-week reading that took place April 29-May 11.
The Star reports that The Last Ship is aiming for a 2014 Broadway arrival. Pitre stated that Logan's agent informed her "that by the end of the second reading, they had all the money they needed for their production in 2014. Amazing!"
The musical has music and lyrics by Grammy winner Sting with a book by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Yorkey (Next to Normal, If/Then) and Tony winner Logan (Red, I'll Eat You Last).
The Last Ship incorporates biographical elements from Sting's life and uses his boyhood home, Newcastle, England, for its locale. It features an original score with a few pre-existing songs from Sting's catalogue, which are given new context in the narrative.
