Martyn Ellis Will Join London Company of Wicked as The Wizard
27 Jan 2014
Martyn Ellis will join the London company of Wicked, currently running at the West End's Apollo Victoria, beginning performances Feb. 17. He will take over as The Wizard from Sam Kelly, who has withdrawn from the production due to ill health.
Ellis has previously appeared in the West End as Nicely Nicely Johnson in Michael Grandage's production of Guys and Dolls, as Harry Dangle in One Man Two Guvnors (also Broadway), as Pumbaa in the original London cast of The Lion King, as Hermann Preysing in Michael Grandage's London revival of Grand Hotel at the Donmar Warehouse and Thenardier in Les Misérables. On TV he played Friar Tuck in 52 episodes of "The New Adventures of Robin Hood" (Warner Bros. International Television).
He joins a cast that also currently features Willemijn Verkaik (Elphaba), Savannah Stevenson (Glinda), Jeremy Taylor (Fiyero), Sue Kelvin (Madame Morrible), Paul Clarkson (Doctor Dillamond), Sam Lupton (Boq), Katie Rowley Jones (Nessarose), Emma Hatton (Standby Elphaba) and Sophie Linder-Lee (Standby Glinda).
Deaf West’s production of SPRING AWAKENING floored the critics when it premiered in California, prompting the Los Angeles Times to write, "It's hard to enumerate all the ways in which Deaf West's SPRING AWAKENING is so very, very good." Now this unapologetically brilliant new production is coming to New York.
