27 Apr 2013
The American Theater Group's production of the new musical Himself and Nora, which explores the romance of James Joyce and Nora Barnacle, officially opens April 27 following previews that began April 24 in Rahway, NJ.
Directed by Michael Bush, the cast of Jonathan Brielle's musical comprises Matt Bogart, Jessica Burrows, David Arthur, Cole Burden and Lianne Marie Dobbs.
Himself and Nora, according to press notes, "sings the true story of one of the great love affairs of the 20th century that changed the face of literature forever. Himself...the brilliant and hard drinking Irish novelist James Joyce, Nora...the earthy chambermaid Nora Barnacle who became his lover, his partner, and his muse for 29 years."
Performances continue through May 12.
An earlier version of Himself and Nora was produced at The Old Globe in San Diego and was honored with a National Endowment Award. American Theater Group co-founders and co-producing artistic directors James N. Vagias, Rick Sordelet and Joe Mancuso saw the Tritone Production under the direction of Michael Bush at the New York Musical Theatre Festival.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
