15 Oct 2013
Atlantis, a new musical featuring a book, music and lyrics by Australian composer Matthew Robinson, has an industry-only reading Oct. 15 in New York City. Former Godspell cast member Eric Michael Krop stars.
Featuring musical direction by Joshua Stephen Kartes, the cast also includes Heather Brorsen, Lynne Wintersteller (A Grand Night for Singing), Edward Watts (Scandalous), Stacia Fernandez (The Drowsy Chaperone, Mamma Mia!), Tracy McDowell (Rent), Crystal Mosser, MiG Ayesa (Rock of Ages), Kaye Tuckerman, Michael Valentine, Elizabeth Stiles and Kevin Russell Rose.
Atlantis, writer Robinson told Playbill.com, "charts the final two weeks leading up to the destruction of the long lost island nation."
Composer, lyricist and performer Robinson is the recipient of Australia's Pratt Prize for Music Theatre. His musical Metro Street received its Australian and South Korean premieres in 2009 produced by the State Theatre Company of South Australia, Arts Asia Pacific and Power Arts. His other works include Happy People, which he developed with mentorship from Schwartz (Wicked), and the musical revue Sing On Through Tomorrow.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
