24 Feb 2003
Andrea McArdle, Laura Benanti, Judy Kuhn, and more will take part in a musical celebration of the legendary Carole King's album "Tapestry." The one-night event takes place Feb. 24 at 8 PM in the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
The Drama Dept. in association with the Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation present the concert of the songstress' Grammy Award-winning album as hosted by television talk show host and comedienne Caroline Rhea. The cast includes Andrea McArdle (Beauty and the Beast), Becky Ann Baker (Titanic), Laura Benanti (Into The Woods), Mary Bond Davis (Hairspray), Debbie Gravitte (The Boys From Syracuse), Shauna Hicks (Meet Me in St. Louis), Judy Kuhn (Les Misérables), Kerry O'Malley (Into The Woods), Mary Testa (42nd Street) and more.
Kathleen Marshall directs the concert which features lighting by Kirk Bookman and musical direction by Kimberly Grigsby. (This is a concert of the songs of King, not to be confused with the stagework Tapestry, a revue of Carole King hits, which played in 2001 at San Francisco's New Conservatory Theatre.)
The 1971 album "Tapestry" featured some of singer-songwriter King's most memorable songs including "I Feel the Earth Move," "So Far Away," "It's Too Late," "You've Got a Friend" and "Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel Like)." The album "Tapestry: Revisited" — a tribute to King's work by various artists — was released in 1995 featuring Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Richard Marx, Aretha Franklin, Faith Hill , The Bee Gees and Celine Dion. King was recently seen in Gap ads with her daughter crooning her famous "So Far Away."
Off-Broadway's Drama Dept. has brought to the stage such productions as As Bees In Honey Drown, The Book of Liz, Music from a Sparkling Planet, The Dark Kalamazoo and recently Shanghai Moon.
Tickets to the concert can be purchased by calling (212) 633-9632. For more information, visit www.dramadept.org.
