21 Feb 2014
Memphis, the 2010 Tony winner for Best Musical that also won Tonys for its book (by Joe DiPietro) and score (with music by David Bryan, and lyrics by Bryan and DiPietro), is eyeing a West End premiere at the Shaftesbury Theatre in October.
Official dates, cast and creative team have not yet been announced, but according to a report in the U.K.'s Daily Mail, Beverley Knight is to play Felicia.
Knight, who is currently starring at the West End's Adelphi Theatre in The Bodyguard through May 31, released her debut album in 1995, has sold over a million albums in the U.K., scoring several top 10’s and four gold certified albums. Her latest critically acclaimed album "Soul UK" was a top 15 charting album upon its release in July 2011.
The Bodyguard is currently booking through Aug. 30. No announcement has been made about who will succeed Knight, but according to the Daily Mail, it will have to close in August, as the Adelphi Theatre is due to host Made in Dagenham, the premiere of a new stage musical version of the film of the same name. There is speculation that The Bodyguard could move to another theatre.
Michael Harrison, producer of The Bodyguard, has told Playbill, "Our closure is not confirmed and we have not been given notice by the Adelphi."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
