Performed in their original Russian with English surtitles, Konchalovsky has utilized the same setting (designed by Rustam Khamdamov) and cast for both productions. According to press materials, this will draw on the striking similarities between Chekhov's two most celebrated plays.
The cast comprises Aleksandr Domogarov, Julia Vysotskaya, Pavel Derevyanko, Natalia Vdovina, Irina Kartasheva, Aleksandr Bobrovsky, Larisa Kuznetsova, Galina Bob, Vitaly Kistchenko, Anatoly Grishin and Vladas Bagdonas.
In a press statement, Konchalovsky commented, "I am delighted to bringing these two Russian productions to London's West End. No matter how many times you appeal to Chekhov, he is inexhaustible. Every time his work is seen on stage, you find something unnoticed, unexperienced and undiscovered."
Konchalovsky is a renowned theatre and film director as well as a screenwriter. His film credits include "In the Dark," "The Lion in Winter" (Golden Globe nomination 2005), "House of Fools" (Grand Special Prize, Venice International Film Festival 2002) and "The Inner Circle." In 1980 he was named People's Artist of Russia and later he was awarded the Order of 4th Degree for Services to the Homeland in 1997. In 2002 he was made a member of the National Academy for Cinematographic Arts and Science and an officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 2005.
