Chuck Wagner stars in the tour of the Broadway musical, based on the famous Robert Louis Stevenson novel about a scientist exploring the dual nature -- good and evil -- in men. The tour, produced by Pace Theatrical Group and Fox Theatricals in association with Jerry Frankel, has been out since April 13, 1999. A new, smaller non-Equity tour begins in the fall.
The New York staging at Broadway's the Plymouth Theatre celebrated its third anniversary April 28.
The tour is directed by David Warren, drawing and expanding on the Broadway direction and scenic design of Robin Phillips, the lauded Canadian director known for the tour of Aspects of Love and stagings at the Stratford Festival in Ontario.
The show was originally conceived for the stage by Steve Cuden and composer Frank Wildhorn, who wrote the score with lyricist-librettist Leslie Bricusse. The tuner debuted at Houston's Tony Award-winning Alley Theatre, where box office records were broken, and a recording based on the staging was released. The show's big hits, "Someone Like You" and "This is the Moment," were heard on that recording (which has sold more than 150,000 copies).
In 1995, Houston's Theatre Under the Stars and Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater staged a subsequent production that resulted in an additional two-CD recording on Atlantic Records.
Gregory Boyd directed the world premiere of Jekyll & Hyde at the Alley Theatre in Houston. Over the years, business for the dark show has been bolstered by a legion of loyal fans who have been called "Jekkies."
Wagner's co-stars in the tour are Kelli O'Hara as Emma and Deb Lyons and Becca Ayres (alternating as Lucy).
