12 Nov 2013
"The Sound of Musicals," a new three-part television series that goes behind-the-scenes and backstage at a series of West End musicals, is to begin transmission on the U.K.'s Channel 4 Nov. 12.
The first episode, being transmitted Nov. 12, focuses on bringing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the West End stage, following it from rehearsals to first night, alongside director Sam Mendes and other members of the creative team.
In the second episode, Cameron Mackintosh and first-time producer Amy Anzel are featured, steering their new productions of Barnum and Happy Days to the stage, respectively. It also features the West End debut of 21-year-old actor Dickie Wood as he joins the company of Mamma Mia!
In the third episode, producers Kenny Wax and David Ian are followed as they produce and cast their productions of Top Hat and The Bodyguard for the West End.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
