New Harvey Fierstein Play Eyes 2014 Broadway Arrival

Tony Award-winning actor-playwright Harvey Fierstein, who is currently represented on Broadway with the Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots, plans to have a new play on Broadway in spring 2014, according to the L.A. Times.

Fierstein told the L.A. Times that he does not intend to star in the play, which is aiming for a March 2014 Broadway arrival. Previous reports indicated that the Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray Tony winner would star.

The play is characterized as a nine-actor ensemble piece. An April report in New York Magazine indicated that Fierstein's latest stage project was titled Casa Valentina and would focus on straight male transvestites. A late 2012 reading of that play featured Tony Award-winning actor John Cullum.

A representative for Fierstein could not comment on the project.

The title and the subject point to the 2005 Michael Hurst-Robert Swope photo book "Casa Susana," which features collection of intimate, candid and carefree snapshots of men in the 1950s-1960s who would gather at a rural home in New Jersey to dress and live as women. The often-glamorous photos capture them in wide-ranging moments from watering the garden and cooking to playing board games and hosting cocktail hour and Christmas parties.
