With music by Tony, Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Pulitzer Prize winner Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by three-time Tony Award nominee Craig Carnelia and book by Tony Award winner John Guare, Sweet Smell of Success will run Sept. 12-14 at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.
Sweet Smell of Success played a brief Broadway run in 2002. It garnered Tony nominations for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. Original star John Lithgow earned the Tony for Best Actor.
The Sept. 12 performance will begin with the posthumous induction of Marvin Hamlisch into NYU’s Musical Theater Hall of Fame.
Directed by John Simpkins, the cast will feature students from the NYU Steinhardt department of music and performing arts professions. Simpkins previously directed Sweet Smeel of Success at NYU in 2011. The upcoming engagement will offer a fresh look at the show.
The creative team includes music direction by Caleb Hoyer, choreography by MK Lawson, scenic design by Michael Schweikardt, lighting design by Chris Dallos, costume design by Michelle Eden Humphrey and sound design by Craig Kaufman. The production stage manager is Christina M. Hagan.
