The original cast of the York Theatre Company's 2012 revival of the musical revue Closer Than Ever, with lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. and music by David Shire, reunites Sept. 20 at the East Side Barnes & Noble to celebrate the release of the show's new cast recording on the Jay Record label.
Cast members Jenn Colella, George Dvorsky, Christiane Noll and Sal Viviano are joined by music director Andrew Gerle and composer Shire at Barnes & Noble (150 East 86th Street, between Lexington and Third Avenues) beginning at 5 PM. The cast will offer selections from the production and will also be on hand to autograph the new CD.
Priority seating is available with purchase. This is a wristbanded event, which are available at the store starting at 9 AM.
Closer Than Ever opened in June 2012 at The York Theatre Company. It is described as an "intimate musical about love, friendship, security, happiness – and holding onto those essentials in a world that pulls us in a hundred directions at once."
With direction by Maltby, associate direction and choreography by Kurt Stamm and music direction by Gerle, the creative team included James Morgan (sets), Nicole Wee (costumes) and Kirk Bookman (lights).
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
