Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play, along with revivals of William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett, Anton Chekhov and Clifford Odets, are among the choices The New Yorker's "The Ten Best Plays of 2008" list.

Longtime theatre critic John Lahr named the shows on the new list, which also includes two musical revivals (South Pacific and Gypsy) as well as a reading of Arthur Kopit's Discovery of America.

Here are the New Yorker's top choices for 2008:

  • The Seagull
  • Othello (Donmar Warehouse)
  • Macbeth
  • Endgame (BAM)
  • The Country Girl
  • South Pacific
  • Passion Play (Yale Repertory Theatre)
  • Pitmen Painters (National Theatre)
  • Gypsy
  • Discovery of America (Lincoln Center)

Also of note to theatre folk: New Yorker writer Hilton Als included Carey Mulligan (Nina in The Seagull) and S. Epatha Merkerson (Come Back, Little Sheba) among "The Eleven Best Performances of Stage and Screen."
