24 Jan 2013
Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running Broadway show in history, celebrates its 25th anniversary on January 26, 2013. Playbill.com looks back at the men who have donned the famous mask over the years. 12 actors have been cast as the Phantom, with an additional 4 who played limited engagements.
Phantom's 25th anniversary will be marked by a Special Gala Performance the night of Jan. 26. While many of the evening’s details are being kept under wraps, the special night will begin with an early 6:30 PM performance at The Majestic Theatre.
To date, Panaro has played The Phantom with the New York Company over 1,800 times in three different engagements, including his most recent return that began in September 2010. Combined, he has performed (as both The Phantom and Raoul) in over 2,800 performances of the Broadway production.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
