Forever Dusty, a new musical by Kirsten Holly Smith and Jonathan Vankin about the life of late singer Dusty Springfield, began previews at Off-Broadway's New World Stages Nov. 11. The cast offered a preview on Nov. 9.
Forever Dusty, according to the producers, tells the "compelling and moving story of Dusty's journey, in a dramatic, high-energy musical filled with some of the most exciting pop songs ever written," including "Son of a Preacher Man," "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," "The Look of Love" and many others. Co-writer Smith also stars in the production. She is joined by Christina Sajous, Coleen Sexton, Benim Foster, Sean Patrick Hopkins, Ashley Betton and Jonathan C. Kaplan.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
