PHOTO CALL: Cyndi Lauper, Harvey Fierstein, Billy Porter, Stark Sands and Cast Celebrate First Preview of Broadway's Kinky Boots

A British shoemaker turns his business around thanks to a drag performer and a new set of discerningly fabulous clientele in Kinky Boots, the new Cyndi Lauper-scored musical based on the 2005 film of the same title, which began Broadway previews March 3 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
Tony winner Harvey Fierstein (Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, Newsies) adapted the film for the stage. It features a score by Grammy Award winner Lauper (Threepenny Opera), whose hits include "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "True Colors."
Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (2004's La Cage aux Folles, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can) directs and choreographs the production that will officially open April 4. Kinky Boots arrives on Broadway following an out-of-town engagement at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago last fall.
Stark Sands (American Idiot, Twelfth Night, Journey's End) is cast as Charlie Price, with Billy Porter (Grease, Angels in America, Smokey Joe’s Café) as Lola.
Here's how it's billed: "In Kinky Boots, Charlie Price (Sands) has suddenly inherited his father’s shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola (Porter). A fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he’s meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible… and discovers that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world."
Designing the production are Tony nominee David Rockwell (scenic design), Tony Award winner Gregg Barnes (costume design), Tony Award winner Kenneth Posner (lighting design), John Shivers (sound design), Josh Marquette (hair design) and Randy Houston Mercer (make-up design).
Kinky Boots is produced on Broadway by Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig, James L. Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
