PHOTO CALL: Fiona Shaw Rehearses for Broadway's The Testament of Mary
06 Mar 2013
Tony Award nominee and four-time Olivier Award-winning actress Fiona Shaw will star in the Broadway world-premiere stage adaptation of Colm Tóibín's recent novella The Testament of Mary, which depicts the story of Mary following the crucifixion of Christ. Performances will begin March 26 at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
Shaw will reunite with director Deborah Warner for the one-woman work that will play a limited 12-week engagement through June 16. The Testament of Mary will officially open April 22.
It marks the first collaboration between Shaw and Warner to premiere in the U.S. The two have earned acclaim for productions of Medea, Happy Days, Mother Courage, Hedda Galber, The Good Person of Sichuan and The Waste Land.
Scott Rudin (The Book of Mormon, "The Social Network") will produce the Broadway production. It will have set design by Tom Pye and lighting design by Jennifer Tipton.
Released in November 2012, Tóibín's 96-page novel reflects a new account of Christ, one in which his mother questions her son's death, his divinity and the followers who called him the son of God.
According to producers, "The Testament of Mary takes place after the Crucifixion. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is in the city of Ephesus where she is both guarded and protected. As two of her son's followers set about giving shape to Jesus' story, Mary tells her own story - the one which has not been heard."
Garry Hynes staged a 2011 premiere of the work starring Marie Mullen at the Dublin Theater Festival. That project, billed Testament, gave life to the novel.
Tóibín's works include "The Blackwater Lightship," "The Master," "The South, Homage to Barcelona," "The Heather Blazing," "The Story of the Night" and "Brooklyn."
Tickets are now on sale at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48thStreet). Tickets are also available at telecharge.com, testamentonbroadway.com or by calling 212-239-6200.
