World Middleweight boxing champion Gennady Golovkin and announcer Michael Buffer made their Broadway debuts July 23 at the 8 PM performance of Rocky at the Winter Garden Theatre.
Golovkin, who will also box July 26 at Madison Square Garden, made a cameo as a boxer in the Broadway musical, and announcer Buffer said his legendary "Let's get ready to rumble!" on stage to kick off the final fight scene in the production.
Directed by Alex Timbers, the musical stars Tony Award nominee Andy Karl (Legally Blonde, The Mystery of Edwin Drood) as boxer Rocky Balboa opposite Margo Seibert (Tamar of the River) as Adrian.
Rocky, according to press notes, "brings to life the iconic and inspiring story of struggling small time Philly boxer, Rocky Balboa, who gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to go the distance against heavyweight champ Apollo Creed. Both an adrenaline-infused spectacle and a surprising story of blossoming romance between two lonely outsiders, Rocky is a heart-stopping and viscerally theatrical new musical for everyone brave enough to follow their dream."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
