The 2011 Actors’ Equity Foundation Acting Awards were distributed at a Jan. 6 ceremony held at the Equity Council Room in New York. Nick Westrate, Danai Gurira and Derek Smith were the honorees.
Westrate is the winner of the annual St. Clair Bayfield Award for his performance as Berowne in Shakespeare's Love’s Labor’s Lost. The award, which was established in 1973 in memory of Equity member St. Clair Bayfield, honors "the best performance in a supporting role by an Actor in a Shakespearean play in the New York metropolitan area," according to Equity.
Danai Gurira and Derek Smith are the winners of the 2011 Joe A. Callaway Awards. The award was established by Equity member Joe A. Callaway to "encourage participation in the classics and non-profit theatre and honors the best performance in a professional production of a classic play (one written prior to 1920) in the New York metropolitan area."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
