New York City Center celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Tony Award–winning Encores! series Nov. 12 with a Gala Benefit starring Raúl Esparza and Kelli O’Hara and featuring performers who have starred in Encores! productions over the past two decades.
Directed by Marc Bruni, the evening also boasted performances by Sarah Uriarte Berry, Walter Bobbie, Victoria Clark, Tyne Daly, Rob Fisher, Debbie Gravitte, Joel Grey, Jared Grimes, Judy Kaye, Rebecca Luker, Rob McClure, Megan Sikora and Daniel J. Watts. The artists will be accompanied by the Encores! Orchestra under the musical direction of Rob Berman.
The benefit will help fund New York City Center's artistic and education programs.
The gala, honoring Stephanie and Fred Shuman, began at 6 PM with cocktails at City Center followed by the show at 7 PM and a post-performance dinner in The Grand Ballroom of The Plaza Hotel (58th Street at Fifth Avenue).
Gala co-chairs were Patricia and Jesse Lovejoy, Stacey and Eric Mindich, and Robin and Fred Seegal.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
