The York Theatre Company's developmental lab of the new disco musical Last Dance, which features the songs of Grammy winner Paul Jabara ("Enough Is Enough," "It's Raining Men," "Last Dance") with a book by Shaun McKenna (Lord of the Rings, The Musical), began performances Sept. 20.
Directed by Philip Wm. McKinley (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), the cast comprises Emmy Award nominee Rob Morrow, Jack Noseworthy, Jill Shackner, Katrina Lenk and Anastacia McCleskey.
"Those who missed the days of Studio 54, didn’t miss their Last Dance!," according to York notes. "This exciting new show is a tale from the 70s when enough was never enough. A joyful celebration of disco dreams, glitter balls and dangerous delights. It's a story about a time, not so long ago, when a man wrote songs for the woman he thought he'd never lose."
Tickets are priced at $15 and are available online at yorktheatre.org, by calling (212) 935-5820, or in person at the box office at the York Theatre at Saint Peter's (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue).
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
