Paul Taylor-Mills Ltd. presents the European premiere of bare, the pop opera by Damon Intrabartolo and Jon Hartmere — which was recently re-envisioned as a book musical and seen Off-Broadway — officially opening April 30 at the Union Theatre in London.
Paul Taylor-Mills ( Rent at Greenwich Theatre, Steel Pier at the Union Theatre, Little Shop of Horrors at White Bear) directs the production, which features music by Intrabartolo and a book and lyrics by Hartmere. Previews began April 24 for a run through May 25.
This is not the same incarnation that was recently seen at Off-Broadway's New World Stages featuring a revised libretto and additional material by Lynne Shankel ( Altar Boyz, Cry-Baby). As previously announced, that staging has international productions planned for Korea, Japan, Brazil and Los Angeles, and a cast album is in the works. The cast includes Ross William Wild as Jason, Michael Vinsen as Peter, Lilly-Jane Young as Ivy, Melanie Greaney as Nadia, Dale Evans as Matt, Liam Ross-Mills as Lucas, Rosanna Yeo as Tanya, Fia Houston-Hamilton as Kyra, Natalie Chua as Diane, Dan Krikler as Rory, Dean John Wilson as Zack, Jordan Lee Davies as Alan, Yvette Robinson as Claire, Hannah Levane as Sister Chantelle and Matt Harrop as the Priest.
Here's how producer Kylie Vilcins for Paul Taylor-Mills Ltd. bills the work: "A contemporary rock musical, bare follows a group of teens wrestling with issues of identity, sexuality, and religion at a co-ed Catholic boarding school. Provocative, raw, and unyielding in its exploration of how today's generation navigates the tightrope between adolescence and adulthood, bare examines the consequences of baring a soul-or hiding it from those who matter most."
Other members of the creative team include choreographer Racky Plews, musical director Huw Evans and designer David Shields .
The creative team behind bare previously produced Steel Pier at The Union and Rent at Greenwich Theatre.
Bare had its world premiere at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles, CA, where it began performances Oct. 14, 2000, and ran through Feb. 25, 2001. Following the Los Angeles production, Bare began its run at the American Theatre of Actors (Chernuchin Theatre) March 25, 2004. It opened April 19, 2004, and played through May 27, 2004. Bare has since had more than 100 productions worldwide.
