Bitching and Belting: An Evening with Michael Gioia and Friends, a concert event where no complaint is too small and no note is too high, will be held July 3 at 54 Below. In anticipation of the evening, members of the cast and creative team share songs they like to belt and bitch to as part of this week's Playbill Playlist.
The 11:30 PM concert, hosted by Playbill.com staff writer Michael Gioia — who also hosted The Contemporary Musical Theatre Songwriters You Should Know: LIVE! at 54 Below in January — will feature music direction by Charlie Rosen.
Performers include Gioia, two-time Tony Award nominee Robin De Jesus (In the Heights, La Cage aux Folles), Bonnie Milligan (Jasper in Deadland), Natalie Weiss (Everyday Rapture, national tour of Les Miz), Jenna Leigh Green (Wicked, Bare), Ariana DeBose (Bring It On, Motown), Ariana Groover (Holler If Ya Hear Me), Janet Krupin (If/Then), Tommy McDowell (American Idiot national tour), Joey Nelan, Lauren Renahan and Carolyn Caton.
Here's how the night is billed: "Pre-game with your favorite whiskey, throw on your best red, white and blue and head to 54 Below to ring in July 4 with some of the best belters on Broadway. Bitching and Belting: An Evening with Michael Gioia and Friends promises to be an unforgettable night where no complaint is too small and no note is too high. Join Michael Gioia (who hosted Playbill's Contemporary Musical Theatre Songwriters You Should Know LIVE! in January) and his Broadway faves for a set list of the sassiest songs, most dangerous duets and, of course, some bad-ass bitching. There will be (vocal) fireworks — we promise!"
Yvette Kojic co-produces and co-directs alongside Gioia, and Rochel Saks will be the evening's stage manager.
54 Below is located at 254 W. 54th Street. There is a $20 cover charge plus a two-drink minimum. For more information and tickets, call (646) 476-3551 or visit 54Below.com.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
