PLAYBILL PLAYLIST: Todd Graff, Writer and Director of Cult Film "Camp," Picks Influential Show Tunes
02 Oct 2013
"If I Had A Million" from The Me Nobody Knows in a tie with "Carousel" from Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris. These two shows were done every summer of my childhood at Stagedoor Manor, and the experience of attending that camp utterly changed my life. It gave me hope, direction, joy, professionalism... and years later it gave me a career as a filmmaker, when I chose it as the subject of my first film as writer/director: "Camp." It is a debt I can never repay.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
