Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood will play Maria in The Sound of Music Live!, which will air on NBC Dec. 5 at 8 PM. With the NBC special a few days away, we wondered: What actresses could play the role of Maria in a Broadway revival of The Sound of Muisc? polled our readers via Facebook and Twitter asking them to share which actresses they would like to see play the iconic role on Broadway.

Here are some of our reader responses followed by our own commentary.

Nathan Hinds: Laura Osnes of course! Can’t think of anyone more qualified…
Jeremy Fillip: Laura Osnes! Her voice is perfect for the part.
Stella Grimaldi: Why, none other but queen Laura Osnes.
Brian Bacon: Laura Osnes, of course!
Hayley Goldstein: Laura Osnes. Most definitely
Diana Victoria Aljadeff: Now the best of the young Broadway sopranos is Laura Osnes (1985). She is doing Cinderella and of course she could be very good in The Sound of Music. Another soprano is the also marvelous Kelli O'Hara (1977) who was in South Pacific.
@BlakeG_17: Laura Osnes would be perfect
@marcgtheater: Would LOVE to see Laura Osnes play Maria if The Sound of Music was revived
@kevinrenn: Laura Osnes would be a great Maria in The Sound of Music! With her beautiful vocals, and her stage sweetness, she'd be fantastic

In 2007 Osnes made her Broadway debut as Sandy in Grease after winning the television competition "Grease: You're the One That I Want." Since leaving that production, Osnes has enjoyed starring roles in South Pacific, Anything Goes, Bonnie and Clyde and can currently be seen in the title role of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. With Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella and South Pacific on her resume, Osnes would be a great candidate for a revival of their Tony Award-winning musical The Sound of Music; in fact, she starred in a concert version of that family-friendly classic at Carnegie Hall.
