Portuguese and Spanish-Language Stagings of The Lion King and Mary Poppins On the Horizon
20 Apr 2012
Disney's Tony Award-winning musical The Lion King will heat things up with a new Portuguese-language production premiering in Brazil next year. A Spanish-language production of Mary Poppins will also fly into Mexico City this fall.
Bianca Marroquin, who has appeared on Broadway in Chicago, is cast as the titular umbrella-toting nanny in Mary Poppins, which will begin performances Nov. 12 at the Telmex Cultural Center, in Mexico City. OCESA produces the first-ever Spanish-language staging of the musical based on the beloved film.
The Lion King, the international hit shaped by Tony-winning director Julie Taymor, will open in São Paulo, Brazil on March 7, 2013, at the Teatro Abril. It will be the largest musical produced in Brazil and marks the first time the musical has been performed in Portuguese. T4F (Time For Fun) produces the Brazilian engagement.
Set in the magical world of La Belle Epoque Paris, where fashion, glamour, and passion prevail, Lerner and Loewe's celebrated musical is a romantic comedy about one young woman's journey to find her true self... and her true love.
