Post-Tonys Drowsy Chaperone Box Office Gets Wake Up Calls — Worth $700,000
By Kenneth Jones
The Drowsy Chaperone may not have taken the Best Musical Tony Award June 11, but its five wins and videogenic musical number helped bring in $700,000 immediately following the broadcast. Following the Sunday Tony telecast on CBS (and as of 3 PM June 12), Drowsy prompted more than four times the usual Monday take, a spokesman said. Variety reported that the musical comedy at the Marquis Theater now has an advance of $10 million. The Drowsy Chaperone won 2006 Tonys in the categories of Best Score (Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison), Best Book (Don McKellar and Bob Martin), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Beth Leavel), Best Costumes (Gregg Barnes) and Best Scenic Design of a Musical (David Gallo). At the Tony Awards, the company performed "Show Off," a flashy comic number featuring Tony nominee Sutton Foster. |
